HeuristicLab 3.3.15 "Berlin" Release

We are happy to announce the release of HeuristicLab 3.3.15, which is named after the location of last year's Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (​GECCO) in Berlin, Germany.

HeuristicLab 3.3.15 "Berlin" contains the following new features:

  • New problems:

    • Graph Coloring
  • New data analysis algorithms:
    • Barnes-Hut t-SNE (C# port of Laurens van der Maaten's C++ implementation)
    • Kernel Ridge Regression
    • Elastic-net Regression (glmnet wrapper)
  • Support for categorical variables for symbolic regression and multiple data analysis algorithms
  • PSO improvements (compatible with standard PSO 2011)
  • Extreme-point based packing algorithm for 3D bin packing
  • New functionalities for data preprocessing
  • New functionality for run analysis (e.g. RLD/ECDF)

"New ways of managing slab processing"

Our company partner voestalpine authors a own blog lately and in one of their articles they published the output of the K-Project HOPL in slab processing. 

Under the title " New ways of managing slab processing" they wrote an article about the innovative digital technologies that are being applied to manage slab processing at the Steel Division in Linz.

Gabriel Kronberger received Researcher Award 2017

We are looking for a doctoral candidate for the Joint JKU/UAS International PhD Program in Informatics - this is a funded PhD Position. 

"Self-organizing and Self-adaptive Distributed Evolutionary Algorithms"

We are looking for outstanding students with a degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and a strong background in computational intelligence, machine learning and programming. During your work on the PhD project, you will be part of the Heuristic and Evolutionary Algorithms Laboratory (HEAL,, one of the leading research groups in the field of applied evolutionary computation research. Members of the research group HEAL have implemented and maintain the open source software HeuristicLab, and they are continuously working on several application-oriented research projects with leading industrial companies in Austria. You will be supervised by Michael Affenzeller in collaboration with a co-supervisor at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. The position is fully funded (comfortably covering living expenses and health insurance) for 3 years.
HEAL is part of the Department for Software Engineering of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria located in Hagenberg, Austria. The campus in Hagenberg is located 20 minutes north of Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, and is easily reachable by car or public transport. Linz is well known for its successful production industry, cultural diversity, and music.

ÖGOR-award for Jan Zenisek's master thesis

Jan Zenisek was awarded by the Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Operations Research for his outstanding master thesis!

The Austrian Society of Operations Research (in german: Österreichische Gesellschaft für Operations Research, abbreviated ÖGOR) is a non-profit scientific organization which supports application and and promotes development of operation research methods in Austria, focusing upon efficient knowledge transfer between high-profile scientific research and decision makers in all areas.

The award for the best master thesis is bestowed on the basis of opinions of international experts.

Jan joined our research group a year ago and finished his Master's degree in Software Engineering on the University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg with distinction. The Master Thesis is titled "Simulation-Based Optimization Strategies for Real-World Vehicle Routing Problems" and he is now carrying on his research on the EFRE IWB 2020 project "Smart Factory Lab".
