Mini-Symposium at EUROGEN - Applications of Optimization in Engineering Design Automation (AppODA)

Mini-Symposium at EUROGEN, Sep 13-15, 2017, Madrid, Spain

Based on a history of automating design calculations, simulation support, and applying artificial intelligence and optimization in engineering domains, design automation (DA) provides methods and tools for exploring solution spaces and generating designs at different levels of detail.

Optimization problems are often an inherent part of DA approaches and solutions since the complexity of products often yields optimization tasks which exceed the human capacity to solve them manually. In order to support the striving to fully explore the design envelope before making decisions with a high impact on committed costs, a wide range of industries has thus adopted optimization problems within engineering DA. Exemplary application areas include the validation and improvement of structural aspects and the appropriate selection, dimensioning and assembling of components to fulfil customer-specific needs. Beyond, also optimization methods to guide solution finding related to tasks with large and unstructured solution spaces have received increased attention.

This symposium aims at bringing together practitioners and scientists from academia, research institutes and industry to discuss about practical and scientific problems and solution strategies in the context of engineering design automation and optimization.

Once again, the EvoSoft workshop at this years GECCO is being hosted by Stefan Wagner and Michael Affenzeller. Everyone is invited to submit a contribution addressing a number of different aspects such as:

  • development and application of generic and reusable EC software systems
  • architectural and design patterns for EC software systems
  • software modeling of EC algorithms and problems
  • open-source EC software systems
  • expandability, interoperability, and standardization
  • comparability and traceability of research results
  • graphical user interfaces and visualization
  • comprehensive statistical and graphical results analysis
  • parallelism and performance
  • usability and automation
  • comparison and evaluation of EC software systems

The deadline for the submission is March 27th, 2017. Further important dates and submission guidelines can be found in the call for papers.

Andreas Beham received Junior Researcher Award 2016

The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences (FH OÖ) honors outstanding scientists and scholars actively engaged in research in an annual award ceremony. We are delighted to announce that a prize went also to our research team this year: Andreas Beham received the Junior Researcher Award 2016 for his contributions to the field of heuristic and evolutionary optimization. Congratulations!

Bernhard Werth finished MSc with distinction

We want to congratulate our research group member Bernhard Werth for finishing his Master of Science in Informatics at the Johannes Kepler University with distinction!

His Master Thesis topic was "Identifikation von Datenqualitätsproblem in integrierten Informationssystemen".

Project HOPL at the Austrian Summit Industry 4.0

Leading companies, international experts and politicians presented the strategies for success in the Industry 4.0 sector and discussed current and future prospects of digitalization.

A key topic were cooperations between companies and research institutions - Michael Affenzeller presented the HOPL - Heuristic Optimization in Production and Logistics - Project.
