CFP: Workshop on Evolutionary Computation Software Systems (EvoSoft)

We are pleased to announce that Michael Affenzeller and Stefan Wagner will once again chair the Evolutionary Computation Software Systems (EvoSoft) Workshop at the GECCO 2013 conference. We hope that the workshop will help to identify common efforts in the development of evolutionary computation software systems and will be a great platform to discuss cooperation potentials and synergies between different research groups.
GECCO 2013 will take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from July 06-10, 2013.

Submission deadline: March 28th, 2013 (hard deadline)
Notification of acceptance: April 15th, 2013
Camera-ready submission: April 25th, 2013
Workshops at GECCO 2013: July 6 - 7, 2013

Authors should send their papers to evosoft@heuristiclab.com. All workshop papers have to fulfill the preparation requirements of GECCO 2013 full regular papers. Additional details are available at http://evosoft.heuristiclab.com and http://www.sigevo.org/gecco-2013.

Award for Bioinformatics Researcher

Every year the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences (FH OÖ) honors outstanding scientists and scholars actively engaged in research. We are therefore delighted to announce that long-term HEAL member Viktoria Dorfer received the Junior Researcher Award 2012 for her contributions to the field of bioinformatics. Viktoria's research revolves around the development of novel algorithms to identify proteins in mass spectra. She is a core researcher of Stephan Winkler's young bioinformatics research group, whose successful collaboration with the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) was recently rewarded with a prestigious FWF grant.

Researchers of the Year 2012

Research visit from Spain

David Davis has just left for Australia and we can already announce the next visitor: Pilar Caamaño Sobrino from the Universidad de la Coruña is in Austria this week to prepare a joint research proposal with our group. Her research focuses on the analysis of evolutionary algorithms via fitness landscape analysis, which ties in nicely with the work of HEAL members Erik Pitzer and Andreas Beham. We are therefore pleased to announced that Dr. Caamaño Sobrino will present some of her recent work in Hagenberg this week.
Fitness Landscape and Evolutionary Algorithm
Characterization in Real-Coded Optimization Problems

December 6th, 2012, 16:30 - 18:00
HS8, Hagenberg

Fitness landscape analysis can be used to get a better understanding why some problems are harder for certain optimization algorithms than others. The topic is therefore highly relevant to current metaheuristic research and we are looking forward to a stimulating presentation and discussion session. The event is public and interested visitors are warmly welcome.

Upcoming Guest Lectures

David Davis from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is currently visiting Linz to attend a conference and will use the opportunity to give two guest lectures in Hagenberg:

  • Friday 23.11.2012, 18:00, HS3: "Information and Communication Systems in Australia"
  • Wednesday 28.11.2012, 18:00, HS3: "Principles of System Analysis in Software Development

Entry is free and knowing David we can look forward to two exciting talks.

ECML-PKDD 2012

HEAL member Gabriel Kronberger is currently in Bristol, UK, attending the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML-PKDD2012). He will give a "Spotlight Demo" on symbolic regression with HeuristicLab. For those who cannot attend the demo or who would like some follow-up information, we can recommend the Additional Material page in the HeuristicLab development wiki, which provides complementary material such as slides, video tutorials, test data and pre-configured HeuristicLab experiments and results for our publications and tutorials.
